The NSW Government will host the 9th World Congress of Metropolis in Sydney, 22-25 October.
 
A number of social functions have been planned to offer delegates the opportunity to
enjoy Sydney, meet other delegates and network with fellow world city representatives.
 
Please include these important functions in your itinerary for Metropolis Congress 2008.
Invitations for events will be included in delegate satchels, for collection from 7am Wednesday 22 October at the Congress venue, Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.



WEDNESDAY 22 OCTOBER

WELCOME RECEPTION
Northern Foyer, Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay
18:30hr - 20:30hr

 
Start the Congress with all delegates at a relaxed reception at one of Australia's most
iconic buildings, the Sydney Opera House. Recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Sydney Opera House will provide a spectacular location for delegates to meet.
 
A scenic harbour transfer will be provided for all full delegates and accompanying persons from the Convention Wharf, a short walking distance from Congress hotels and opposite the Congress venue - the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.
 
WOODS BAGOT PARTY

Following the Welcome Reception, our major partner for Metropolis Congress 2008, architects Woods Bagot, will host a party at Sydney’s stylish dinner and drinks venue, The Ivy.
 
You are all invited to attend the post reception party and experience Sydney’s local bar and café scene. The Ivy is a short walk (approximately 10 minutes) from the Sydney Opera House.  



THURSDAY 23 OCTOBER

MASTERCARD CENTRES OF COMMERCE KNOWLEDGE PANEL WORKING LUNCH

At a working lunch for Congress delegates and invited guests, Metropolis Congress 2008 will be unveiling the latest Mastercard Emerging Centres of Commerce Index research in conjunction with the globally esteemed MasterCard Knowledge Panel.
 
The panel has a highly distinguished international reputation, and compares and contrasts the level to which cities are integrated into global drivers of economic activity such as business, investment and tourism, and investigates which cities are emerging as the challengers to the traditional European/North American hierarchy.

CITY OF SYDNEY CITY TALK
State Theatre, Market Street
18:30hr - 20:00hr

The City of Sydney will jointly host a free City Talk with the Congress, centred on the theme of sustainability in the growing urban metropolises of the world.  Speakers include Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP, London Assembly Member Nicky Gavron, and Mayor of Mumbai Dr Shubha Raul who will come together to share their experiences and visions for sustainable cities.

METROPOLIS CONGRESS DELEGATES' DINNER
Restaurants of the Rocks
20:00hr - 23:00hr

 
The Delegates' Dinner will be held in a spectacular waterfront venue of Sydney's renowned heritage precinct, "The Rocks".  This intimate harbourside setting boasts dramatic views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.
 
The Delegates' Dinner is included with full delegate and accompanying person’s registration.
 
Boat transfer will be provided for delegates and accompanying persons from the Convention Wharf.



FRIDAY 24 OCTOBER

PRESIDENT'S GALA DINNER AND 3RD ANNUAL METROPOLIS AWARDS CEREMONY
Overseas Passenger Terminal, Circular Quay
20:00hr - 24:00hr

President of the Metropolis Association, Jean Paul Huchon will host a formal dinner at one of Sydney's most diverse venues, the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Overlooking the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour, the venue provides spectacular views for the VIP event of the Congress.
 
The Metropolis Awards will be presented to member cities for outstanding projects for improving their urban environment and setting new standards for quality of life for the world's metropolises.

The Sydney Dance Company will entertain guests and show why they are internationally renowned as a contemporary dance company.
 
The Presidents Gala Dinner including the Metropolis Awards Ceremony is by invitation only. Heads of delegation from Metropolis Member cities and senior representatives from other world cities as well as Congress partners, Australian Government and other VIP guests will be invited to attend. Invitations will be in delegate satchels for those invited to this event. 
 
Boat transfer will be provided for delegates from Convention Wharf.
